City/River/Sheep/Views – “The Heart Of Nelson

The beautiful Botanical Gardens, “The Botanics” is what the locals call it. Home to every Nelsonians childhood memories (I learnt to ride my bike there many moons ago), cricket ground, an exercise playground and the start of many wonderful short walks or runs for the keen beans!

The most popular is the climb to the “actual” Centre of NZ, now depending on who you are talking too, some say the “actual” Centre of NZ is in Tapawera but who the fuck wants to go to Tap!!!!!

So when I say “climb” it is a decent rise but its not very far to the top, you could do it in your trusty havanas (jandals) with a sneaky cold one in your backpack to neck while you take in the view at the top, and for the smokers or just the not so into walking type there are plenty of places to stop for a rest and take in the stunning views and surroundings there are even sheep to stop and geez at but I recomend not shagging as you may end up with a rash!?

Once you get to the top you can see Nelson/Tasman from a bird’s eye view, on a clear Nelson day it really is magic!

There are a handful of other walking tracks from the top you can take just to get back down to the Botanics, or you could walk through the farm along the Malvern hills to Founders Park, or head down to Branford park and find a swimming hole up the Maitai, it’s all very close and right in the Heart of Nelson.

7-10 min drive from The Bouncing Lamb Backpackers

30-60 min walk to the top and back down to the Botanics (depending on how you want to do it and if you want to make a day of it, it can be done in 15-20 mins).
